MODERN DAY TRANSIT WAREHOUSING

During the past 10 years transit route for Russian cargo via Finland has gone through a restructuring. The huge volumes of electronics and home appliances were gone and transit warehouses in Finland have needed to adapt to the situation. Many warehouses were waiting for the cargo volumes to come back, some of them too long and had to close business because the resources were measured for a much bigger volume. The competition between Finnish warehouses has been tough because they’re also competing with the Baltics. The cargo handling rates have come down about 20% in the past 10 years while the cost level has gone up. Only the strong and/or smart have survived in this adaptation game.

The adaptation has proven to be a tough one for most of the warehouses. One of the favorite phrases used between warehouse people is “like before”, where the “before” refers to the time 10 years ago when the volumes were huge and cargo was always easy to handle. The wakeup call hasn’t reached them all. While some are still dreaming of piles of containers full of televisions, some warehouses have been developing their services to match the current demand of service level. The type of shipments has changed and nowadays more detailed services like checking, measuring, scaling and labelling are needed more often. The warehouses have important role to give valuable information about shipments to the client before the customs clearance in Russia will be made. Other notable service is flexible working hours which is important when the arriving shipment is in a hurry to leave forward or the delivery is preferred to arrange after closing time or on weekend.

It’s sad that most of the warehouses haven’t understood this concept because they’re making other warehouses look bad with mediocre service. The companies in Baltic countries are spreading false word that in Finnish warehouses nothing is possible but it is actually quite the opposite if it doesn’t come to illegal customs activities. There is good expertise of different transportation forms and handling of different type of shipments. There is good expertise of filing documents and knowledge of customs regulations and formalities. There is good level of service and almost everybody have Russian speaking personnel. All this put together makes a successful modern day transit warehouse.
